Initial Post:
Please post responses to all [4] of the following questions. Keep in mind that this will be read by your classmates, so you need to make sure you have clearly explained your ideas. Think of this as a short answer question set: Each question should have an answer of at least a paragraph [3-4 sentences]:
Act 4 is often a difficult read for today’s audiences given the physical, mental, and emotional abuse Kate suffers. What is your take on this series of events and why do you think Shakespeare [who is often seen as being socially progressive for his time] decided to write them into his play?
Do you think Petruchio has actually tamed Kate by the end of the play? Why or why not?
Consider the scenes with Lucentio and Tranio: They once again are switching identities. Why do you think Shakespeare keeps adding to the play’s confusion with this gag? What commentary might he be trying to make?
Finally, consider the sisters one last time. In what ways have their characters and relationship shifted over the course of the play? Why do you think this might be? For more information on Taming of the Shrew check on this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Taming_of_the_Shrew
