A Research Paper, by its very design, will test the student’s ability to construct a well-written paper that shows comprehension of the topic through analysis of various resources. With this assignment, students will learn how to “investigate” a topic, and based on thoughts and the facts and ideas gathered from sources, develop and organize the information into a solid conclusion. For many students, writing a research paper can be one of the most intimidating assignments that they will face in a class. In reality, a research paper is only a series of tasks using several intellectual skills. Once students understand this assignment not as a large paper that requires weeks of research and writing, but a series of skills, the easier writing the paper will be. As addressed earlier, the initial step in writing the paper is choosing the topic, the second is choosing a bibliography (sources), the third step is creating an outline. Students will complete all three of these steps in the Research Paper Proposal, which should be view as a work in progress.

The next steps include gathering information from sources to assist writing the paper, keeping notes of sources, and writing a rough draft. If students use any of the information from the sources word-for-word, they must be cited using endnotes or footnotes (Chicago style). If students read the information and write it in their own words and it is not common knowledge, then the source must be cited because it is paraphrasing someone’s information. While composing the final product, use proper English. Do not use abbreviations, contractions, passive voice, or first or second person (I, you, we, our, etc). Before submitting your paper, check grammar and use spell check. Remember, the way you talk is not the way you write a paper.

This long research paper is a minimum of eight full pages of double-spaced text, and you must consult a minimum of five academically credible sources. Bibliographies and citations will be in the Chicago-
style format. Students may not use Wikipedia or other online encyclopedias. Students need to use Times New Roman, 12 point font, and 1 inch margins. The topic must differ from your short paper.

Your paper should have:

• An introduction with a thesis statement
• A conclusion that summarizes your main points and thesis
• Supportive body paragraphs that include both analysis and examples from your research
• At least 5 academic sources
• Citations (footnotes/endnotes) and a Bibliography in Chicago Style
