The Marvelous Sugar Baby also known as a subtlety is a great piece of work by an American artist Kara Walker. It is a large-scale piece of installation art that was first presented in the year 2014. The artistic work involves a massive sugar-coated sphinx with brilliantly white colour. It bears the features of an African woman despite its colour. The Marvelous Sugar Baby is sited in the legendary Domino Sugar factory in Brooklyn currently known as Williamsburg. Albeit it includes fifteen other small black sculptures which seem to be attending to it, the sphinx commands and holds visitors’ attention with its blinding white colour.
What makes The Marvelous Sugar Baby work feel special to me is the artist’s ability to use refined sugar to come up with a sculpture that depicts the racial stereotypes of an African-American woman as mammies. The sculpture challenges my creativity expanding my artistic horizons to encompass what may not be visible to the naked eye. Kara is able to artistically express her perception of the world whilst providing a breath-taking sculpture to her audience. Kara Walker did not only create the work to delight her audience but to deliver a deeply unsettling and disturbing message of the plight of African slaves in global the sugar trade (Israel, par. 24). To every inquisitive audience, Walker ensures that they consider the history of sugar and the role it played in class and culture (Vartanian, par.8). With the sculpture’s overly sexualized figure, the artist depicts the physical and sexual exploitation of African slaves before the onset of civilization. The selection will someday be considered a masterpiece for delivering a message that reminds humans of a historical era we would not want to have repeated. Kara Walker may also be considered a “giant” of the arts for her creativity and magnificent artwork.
