Q. 2 – Famed American criminal defense lawyer William Moses Kunstler tells us that, “We are blind to the depth of our prejudices.”
Individual racism is the prejudice that exists within individuals. This kind of prejudice is often identifiable, as people hold preconceived notions about others based upon race. Kunstlers’ work clearly illustrates what is meant by institutionalized racism. The legal system, and other institutions such as education, provide the structures for sustaining racism that are legal and invisible.
If Kunstler is correct in his assertion that, “We are blind to the depths of our own prejudices,” how might we become aware of our own racism? Is it also important to illuminate institutional racism?
