Comprehensive Patterns in Nursing Care
Patient-Centered Approaches to Nursing can be applied to develop comprehensive patterns of nursing care for young teenagers who are becoming first-hand mothers. The approach was inductively developed from Faye Glenn Abdellah’s theory of twenty-one nursing problems. According to the theory, nurses need to identify the patient’s issue through the use of relevant skills in the profession. Abdellah proposed ten steps to identify a patient’s problem and the application of eleven skills in the nursing process thus the name twenty-one nursing problems. The theory also identifies four categories of patients’ needs which are needs basic to all patients, remedial care needs, needs for health restoration, and sustenance care needs (Faye Glenn Abdellah Nursing Theory, n.d). Nursing problems are categorized into the common elements of the patient, the kind of interpersonal relationship between the patient, the family, and the nurse and the physiological, emotional and sociological needs of the patients.
Young teenagers who are becoming first-hand mothers need a comprehensive care that is unique from cares offered to other patients. The nurses need to apply relevant skills to analyze the patients so as to recognize their nursing problems. This will enable them to decide on the appropriate course of action and formulate a care plan that will be centered on the individual patient’s needs as identified in the analysis. Young teenagers who are becoming mothers need not be treated as their adult first-hand mother’s counterparts since they bear relatively less experience in life to help them through the period. The teenagers could also be mentally unprepared for the tremendous change in their life which could affect their health. Some could be compelled to drop out of school to give birth something the society might ridicule. The nurses hence need to provide a continuous care to the individual patient-centered needs (Nursing Theories, n.d) to help them through the often most challenging part of a young teenager’s life.
