School of Thoughts in Nursing Essay

Philosophy is a study that uses reasoning to understand basic things in the world such as existence, knowledge, values, language, and thought. Philosophies in the nursing profession are often used as the groundwork for different theories and actions. The most predominant philosophical schools of thoughts in nursing include received view, perceived view, and postmodernism. However, perceived view is the philosophical school of thought that best encompasses the nursing profession.

Perceived view is a philosophical school of thoughts that base its theoretical constructions on alternative methods of action (Warelow, 2013). The school of thoughts embraces the use of values, intuitions, thoughts, subjectivity, history, and multiple realities. It also retains the use of some scientific knowledge especially that which through various researches and use is found to yield positive outcomes on patients’ health. The school of thought is highly congruous with the nurses committed to improving, human being’s health. According to Polifroni( 2011), perceived view is a relatively fluid and dynamic school of thought. It is updated with every current best-evidenced practice (Melnyk, n.d). It does not necessarily seek the truth but understanding of the different underlying health issues. According to the view, theories are neither wrong nor right. Theory generalization in thi school of thought is highly subjective and requires the use of mind and senses to make detailed yet not necessarily measurable observations (Meleis, 2011). The view hence embraces the application of different theories to different health issues.

In conclusion, as evident in the above discussion, perceived view is the most ideal philosophical school of thoughts among the three predominant schools of thought. This is because it takes into consideration all the aspects that would enhance improvement of the patient’s health. Although not reliant on precision, observations from the view are usually accurate. There is a paradigm shift from received view to perceived view in most medical institutions.
