Speech of Self-Introduction

Prepare and present a 2-3 minute of self-introduction. This speech is a narrative. It does not require research or evidence other than what you choose to share with the class about you. Strive for a simple organizational pattern: introduction, body and conclusion.

In the introduction preview what you will say in your speech (tell the audience what you are going to tell them). Be sure to include the five required elements of an introduction: Attention getter, listener relevance, credibility, thesis and a preview of your main points.

In the body, make some general statements and support them with examples. Strive for two-main points and for each main point have two-sub-points. In the conclusion, remind the audience what you have told them (tell them what you just told them). In the conclusion, include the three required elements: restate your thesis, restate your main points, and finish on a high note (a clincher).

Sample Outline Speech of Self-Introduction 

Your outline should be a full-sentence outline. The introduction, main points and conclusion should be written in full-sentences (as you intend to speak them) and the sub-points or minor points can be shortened.
It should look something like this:

Introduction
Attention Getter: Holy O.J. Simpson, Beef Gravy Wonton and the Count of Montefusco! While these may seem like the ramblings of a crazy man, they are all part of a great story: A San Francisco Story!

Credibility: I was lucky enough to grow up in the City of San Francisco, where the sites and sounds of the city had real influence on who I am today.

Listener Relevance: While you may not have grown up in San Francisco, I’m sure that your hometown an effect on your life.

Thesis: Hello, my name is Dan and I am a fifth-generation San Franciscan. Today, I would like to tell you how the city by the bay has influenced who I am as a person.

Main Point Preview or (MPP): More specifically I am going to discuss how my local neighborhood fostered a sense of family, and contributed to my lifelong love of sports and the outdoors.

Body
Main Point 1 or MP1: I grew up in the city of San Francisco, in an Irish Catholic neighborhood right next door to San Francisco City College.
Sub-point A: Influence of the Catholic Church on my neighborhood.

2. Had both my first broken bone and broken heart behind the church.

Sub-point A: Avid SF Giants, 49er and Golden State Warriors fan.
