Florence Nightingale is a renowned nursing theorist for being the founder of nursing theories. Her environmental theory bears great ideas that if applied globally can revolutionize the health system and substantially reduce mortality rates. Her dedication to ensuring universal wellbeing for all is something that all professional nurses should emulate. She believed there are certain environmental determinants to good health such as pure and fresh air, natural light from the sun, efficient drainage, and good housing. Her theory also recognizes the contribution of other psychological, physiological and social determinants to health (Nursing Theories, 2011). Florence dedicated her life to contributing to the fulfillment of Millennium Development Goals which she believed if achieved, would play a huge role in promoting global health and wellbeing. She influences my own personal theory of nursing which is rooted in my dedication to offering the best-evidence nursing care to the public. Professional nursing theories should thus incorporate external factors as they too play a key part in health.
The most surprising thing in the content of the chapters is the theorists’ dedication to improving nursing models. Each of the nursing theory provides sensible and realistic ideas on the fundamental attributes of public health and welfare. Albeit most of the theories are not entirely flawless, they offer essential insights of what nursing should entail. When integrated, the theories can make major contributions to the universal nursing care and the entire health system at large.
