Evidence based practice and PICOT

Evidence based practice and PICOT

Level I of evidence best answers the PICO question on the non-medical techniques that could improve inpatients’ sleep quality and quantity. “Non-pharmacologic interventions to improve the sleep of hospitalized patients” (Tamrat, Huynh-Le, & Goyal, 2013) is an article that provides a systematic review of relevant works from Randomized Control Trials (RCTs) on the clinical issue. It provides practical guidelines that are critically analyzed to provide the best evidence to the clinical problem at hand. It is comprehensive and easy for nurses to study and comprehend. The article reviewed the research findings of forty-nine researchers on related subjects of discussion. It was published online in the year 2013 and on book in following year thus making it a relatively current evidence to apply today.

Relevant databases are crucial in article searching. National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is a database that bears various journal articles. It is one of the many subsets of the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) which is also a part of the National Institute of Health thus making it a reliable source. The keywords to my PICOT question were “non-medical techniques” and “inpatients’ sleep quality and quantity”. I exclusively integrated relevant electronic record systems to streamline my research and ensure I save on time whilst acquiring the best relevant findings to my clinical question.

I used Boolean connectors to help me locate the article from the database. The connectors involve the use of “and”, “or” or “not” (University of Minnesota, n.d.). I hence typed “non-medical techniques and inpatients’ sleep quality and quantity”. This enabled me to acquire optimal results from my search.
