Read the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. In the antebellum period, Southern apologists for slavery claimed that slavery was a “positive good”, that slavery benefited the slaves as well as the slave owners. They claimed that slaves were content to be slaves, were intellectually deficient and so incapable of greater status, that slavery provided exposure to “civilization”, Christianity and cultural betterment for blacks, and so on. In his Narrative, Douglass works to counter claims of slavery as a “positive good” and dispel any notions of black inferiority. In a 1200-1400-word essay, use the evidence presented in Narrative to examine how Douglass dispels the southern claim of slavery as a “positive good” and counters the notion that blacks are suited to be slaves. Be sure to refer specifically to the evidence. Cite sources!
