Animals have been used for most of the scientific and commercial tests over the years. Different types of live animals such as mice, rabbits, rats, fish, hamsters, cats, dogs, and primates are caged in laboratories across continents for this purpose. Most of the scientific advancements especially in medicine can be attributed to these animals. This has consequently contributed to a substantial decrease in human mortality rates in the world. However, saving a life at the expense of another is a cruel thing to do to the living creature whose life is lost. There exist various alternative methods to carry out these experiments today and it is now upon us to save our animals too.
According to Peta (par5), over a hundred million animals suffer and die every year from drug, chemical, cosmetics and food tests in the United States alone. This also includes training in medical schools and curiosity-driven experiments. The tests are still being undertaken even after other non-animals tests such as the use of cell cultures, computer models, live and dead human tissues from volunteering persons, and safe volunteer studies have proven to be often quicker, cheaper, and more effective (Cruelty-Free International, Par 1). However, proponents of animal testing emphasize the contributions of this test to major life-saving treatments in the world. They affirm that there are no alternative ways of researching on whole living organisms (Shannon, Par 3). According to them, strict regulations should be used to prevent animal mistreatment in laboratories during the test (ProCon.org, par 2). Nonetheless, since animals are different from humans and other animals, the results may not always be correct. This means something could pass an animal test and still be unsafe for use.
The benefits that animal testing has brought in to scientific and commercial researches are undisputable. However, even though strict regulations are to be put into place to prevent mistreatment of animals in laboratories, it is impossible to fully control the effects and outcomes of these tests to the animals. Most animal’s lives are hence irreversibly ruined in the name of saving other lives. It is hence important to replace animal tests with alternative methods which are proven to be even better in conducting these experiments.
